DRIFT STOPPED.
BIRKENHEAD FINANCES. A more optimistic view of the finances of the borough was taken by the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council, last night. He said that the position was materially better than when, not much more than a year ago, lie had proposed certain economics. They had been unwelcome, but effective. There was now a balance of £100 at the bank. The rate arrears from last year were £4000, and lie asked the council not to bring forward any suggestions for large expenditure before February, 1934. If that policy were adopted the borough would be in a sound financial position. Steps were being taken to collect that £4000, but the financial drift had been stopped. If the arrears were collected, then works could be undertaken. Mr. J. Prickett pointed out that a deficit had been budgeted for in some accounts, so that the finances were not strong yet. Other members expressed satisfaction that the finances showed such material improvement.
