ANTARCTIC EXPLORER.
OFFICER ON AUSTRALIA. WITH 'THREE EXPEDITIONS. An Antarctic explorer -\vitli three expeditions to liis credit is among the officers on H.J1.A.6. Australia. InstructorCommander M. H. Moves made his first acquaintance with the Antarctic in 1911, when he was a member of the Australasian Antarctic expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson. The expedition left in the Aurora, and spent 15 montlis in scientific research and survey work 011 Queen Mary Land. Commander Frank Wild was in charge of one of the shore parties. As a result of this expedition large stretches of coastline were charted, as well. as portions of the hinterland, while a tremendous amount of scientific information was obtained. Commander Moyes' second expedition to the Antarctic regions was made in 1917 in the Shackleton relief expedition. In 1929 Commander Moyes was a member of the Banzare, as Mawson's British-Australian-New Zealand Antarctic research expedition in the' Discovery was known. Many gaps on the chart were filled in, including Macßobertson Land and Princess Elizabeth Land. Among the scientists on that expedition was Mr. R. A. Ealla, ornithologist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Commander Moyes is a bachelor of science and a fellow ■ of the Royal Geographical Society. An article by liirri in the journal of the New South Wales Geographical Society gives an idea of the enormous amount of work that lias been done in connection with Antarctic exploration, and a map of Antarctica drawn by the commander shows the recent discoveries. The New Zealand Dependencies cover about 50 degrees of the Antarctic continent.
