N.Z. TOURNEY FINAL.

OTAGO AND CANTERBURY TIE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. Fine weather prevailed when Otago and Canterbury took the field yesterday afternoon in the final of the New Zealand ladies' hockey championship. The game ended in a scoreless draw. Under the rules, the teams will be bracketed in the championship, each holding the K Cup and the Floyd Shield for six months. Eastern, the runner-up, will take the Holden Cup. Both sides gave a splendid exhibition of hockey, many strong shots sent in being stopped by the respective goalies. There was little difference temtorially in the first spell, Canterbury, if anything, having a slight advantage. Turning round Otago kept up a stern pressure for some time, but Canterbury defended magnificently. Several Otago shots just missed the net. Canterbury retaliated several times, invading the Otago circle, but were soon driven back. Otago again made several attempts to score in exciting play, only to see shots just miss the objective. Halfway through Canterbury attacked the Otago circle, and a strong shot was sent in. The goalie stopped it on her hand and cleared. From then onward both sides attacked alternately without result, the game ending with honours even. The teams walked back to the pavilion amid cheering and passed under an archway of sticks formed by members of the visiting Auckland men's hockey team. The game was a fine finale to a splendid tournament. It was a financial success, and was run throughout without a hitch.

DEVONPOET SHIELD

COMPETITION. ST. LUKE'S IN THE LEAD. Although the Devonport Shield matches have lacked the substance and solidity of the main competition, it is really not on account of a general fall in the standard of play. Beyond the depletion in the ranks caused through the absence of some of the leading players in the successful mission in the South, and the state of the grounds at present, there is not much in the way of suggestion. Viewed from another standpoint, the Devonport Shield conditions should have a tendency to improve matters, although to many the playing of two sets of matches in one afternoon is almost sheer heresy. However, this competition was specially inaugurated for the benefit of players remaining at home while representative and touring matches are in progress. With the present team on tour, the ranks of all the seven teams, with the exception of North Shore, suffered, which gives many juniors an opportunity for experience in the senior grade. Taking all things into consideration, Saturday's games provided a good afternoon's sport, and some of the junior players made an excellent impression. Naturally, with so many matches, play varied, but there was plenty of incident, and the majority of the games were very evenly contested. A great struggle ensued from the start in the match, between St. Luke's and North Shore, in which the former team was principally comprised of junior players, and they managed to hold their own against the full complement of North Shore. The game between Somerville and North Shore provided another close encounter, North Shore winning by two goals. University, during the afternoon, defeated Papatoetoe and lost to Training College. Papatoetoe put up a good fight against University, losing by only one goal, and in their second match extended Somerville, although the latter won by three goals to one.

WAIPA BEATS WAIKATO.

A ladies' representative hockey match was played between Waipa and Waikato at Steele Park, Hamilton, yesterday. Waipa won by three goals to one.
