FARMERS' FIELD DAY.
IN PUTAEURU DISTRICT. A successful "field day" was organised by the Putaruru branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Proceedings started at 10 a.m. when about 70 farmers assembled at Mr. /A. R. Vosper s farm, where Mr. A. E. Missen, # a ■well-known breeder, gave an interesting address on "The Dairy Cow." Mr. Missen explained in detail the various points to be looked for in a milker, and also answered numerous questions. , The party inspected Mr. vospers stacks of ensilage and hay, each of which secured first prize in its class, and a sample pit of ensilage from Mr. Muskers farm, which had also been placed first in its section. This ensilage sample was a subject of interest, as it appeared to be almost as green and fresh as on the day that it had been pitted. Before an excellent luncheon, which was provided by the ladies, was enjoyed, the party was addr.essed by Mr. Woodyear Smith, of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Mr. C. S. Dalgleish, Fields Instruction Officer, of Rotorua, who planned the itinerary. The former spoke on ensilage and the latter on hay, pastures and root crops. Both addresses were most instructive and thoroughly appreciated by the large gathering of farmers present. The party then moved on to Mr. Frank Rose's farm on the Tirau Road, where Mr. R. Chilcott, of Te Rapa, a noted pig breeder, gave an address on pigs. Those present were also invited to test their judgment in selecting the three best dairy cows from among six which were yarded. A large number entered, and after Mr. Missin had placed the animals the winners were announced to be Messrs. E. D. White and R. Fitzgerald, who both placed two out of three animals correctly. Before dispersing Mr. P. Taylor, of the Department of Agriculture, gave an informative discourse on "Crops and Their Mineral Needs." On the motion of the president of the Putaruru branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr. J. J. Shine, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Messrs. A. R. Vosper and F. Rose for placing their farms at the disposal of the organisers of the field day.
