ROTORUA GOLF.

CHAMPIONS DEFEATED. * TAIXIS AN» BRINSDEN OUT. BARNES-GRAHAM AND DA VIES WIN. (By TelegTaph.—Special to " Star.") ROTORUA, Wednesday. Tsio second round of the Rotorua golf championship this afternoon provided a number of interesting matches, and the results were not altogether as expected. It. B. Lusk again supplied the "highlight" of the day, recording another brilliant round of 69—the scratch score of the course. He gave his opponent, W. Kusabs, as it may be imagined, no chance, and beat him hollow (9 and 7). Lusk also won the bogey competition 1 up. Another, of the Auckland "veterans," R. J. Rainger—he will have to admit to the term now as he is competing in the Veterans' tourney next week —provided one of the thrills of the day. Two down to O. H. Williams and three to play, his chance looked anything but rosy. Three putts on the next two greens by Williams, however, let Rainger in, and the match squared at the 17th. The next hole was halved in fives, and at the 19th Williams again '"slipped" on the green, and Rainger wrested the honour from him. Consistency and good putting were the factors which brought about the defeat of Tallis (1932 champion) by Davies. The Titirangi player had a chance of •recovering the loss at the first two holes later, but was stymied. Though ho sliced out of bounds at the fifth, he was equal to a half in five; then lost two holes on end, and Davies was three up. This position continued till the turn. Tallis won only the tenth hole coming home, halving the remainder, except the 12th, and he had to acknowledge defeat at the 16th.

M. Carr lost the first three holes oil end to Dodgshun, and threw away the fifth when faced with an easy chip the green. Luck was against him, for after playing two perfect shots to the seventh green, the longest hole on the course, his opponent also got "birdie" and four by holing a long putt. Carr could not overtake the big advantage his opponent had of 4 up at this stage. A. B. Barnes-Graham followed his splendid morning round by soundly defeating "Gus" Brinsden (1931 champion). Ho played well, and with luck, when required —for instance, a long putt from the top of the green for two at tho ninth, where Brinsden was lying nicely for a certain three. The Gisborne player is expected to be one of tho finalists. Moore was erratic in the early stages of his game with Hutchison, but played some excellent holes later on, to win rather comfortably. He plays with ample confidence—perhaps too much— i but displayed form in patches to justify his scratch handicap. Loose limbed and youthful, the is in the twenties. His power is in his tec shots, and long range with the irons. Detailed results: — ROTOHUA CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND. H. B. Lusk (Auckland) beat Spcdding, junr. (Rotorua), 3 and 2. W.
