DUTY ON BARLEY.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. When a remit that there should be a duty on all imported barley came before a meeting of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union to-day, it did not meet with the approval of all members, and finally was held over. The proposal made was that the duty should he on all imported barley, meaning that feed barley 6hould not be admitted free from Australia, as at present. The president, Mr. J. D. Hall, and other members said it would be inadvisable to pass the remit, as the union was committed to a free trade policy. It was argued, on the other hand, that barley was being imported at a dumping price, at which no New Zealand grower could compete.
