THE MAYOR GRATIFIED.
In a message from Rotorua, where he is spending a short vacation, the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, expressed gratification at the result of the poll. A large number of unemployed would benefit by the expenditure—workers who could not have been assisted unless there was loan money to spend. The retail trade would feel the benefit, as the men engaged on the different works at standard wages would have more money to spend. There would also be indirect benefit from the payment for materials required. Mr. H. P. Burton, chairman of the works connnittec, said the necessary procedure for starting the works would be put in hand immediately. The Mayor had made the arrangements for the money, which would all be obtained in New Zealand. About 120 men would be engaged, and in addition there would be extra employment in the trades supplying the material. "The result of the poll," he said, "may be taken as an endorsement by the ratepayers of the principle set out during the platform campaign, that necessary constructive works at standard rates of pay are necessary to increase the spending power of the people. The endorsement of the proposal is all the more gratifying when it is remembered that the council had difficulties with the Loans Board over the sanctioning of the expenditure."
