SALARY RAISED.
BIRKENHEAD TOWN CLERK. The Birkenhead Borough Council last evenin" decided to increase the salary of the °town clerk by £25 as from April last, and by annual increments until a total of £350 is reached. At the same time the officer agreed to relinquish outside paid work after March 31, 1934. _ The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, paid a tribute to the work of the town clerk, who, he said, had given much time to his work, outside ordinary office hours. Some weeks he had worked 62 hours. The Mayor also spoke of the fine work done by other members of the stall. Mr. J. Macdonald said that while the addition of £25 should be granted, it should be retrospective. He also thought that future years' salary should not be the subject of mention. Each year should stand by itself," lie said. The Mayor said that perhaps the council did not realise the amount of work that the town clerk did. When he was appointed, they had realised that the salary was inadequate, and now that the finances were better, the staff should be paid a living wage. .
