TARIFF INQUIRY.

FURTHER EVIDENCE. HOSIERY AND CHIMNEY POTS. Further evidence concerning a variety of articles was placed before the Tariff Commission yesterday afternoon. Representing Connelly Bros., and speaking on behalf of the New Zealand representatives of leading Canadian hosiery firms, Mr. J. M. Connelly asked that the Canadian article should be placed on the same footing as similar goods from Great Britain and Australia. Witness said that Canadian pure silk full-fashioned hosiery was assessed for duty purposes at 32J per cent, plus surtax, which was levied, on the conversion rate at the time of shipment, whereas similar hosiery from the United Kingdom was assessed for duty at the English currency value, the rate being 27J per cent free of surtax. The rate on Australian goods was 27i per cent only, and on foreign makes 55 per cent, plus surtax. The effective advantage the United Kingdom had at present was represented by 43f per cent. While sympathetic toward local manufacturers, Mr. Connelly contended that protection should be within reasonable limits. Maintenance of the present duties of 10 per cent (British), 20 per cent (Australian), and 30 per cent (foreign) on earthenware roofing tiles and ridging was sought by Mr. C. J. Hillier, representing Winstone Roofing Tile Works. Ltd. Application was made by Messrs McGhee and Co., Ltd., on behalf of British manufacturers, for the abolitior of the 20 per cent (British duty) 01 down-draught preventing chimney pots . and also glazed tiles.
