BADMINTON.

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS. MARTIN AND MISS EDCJtETT WIN FEAR AND FOW TAKE C DOUBLES. Tho North Island and Auckland badminton championship and handicap tournament was concluded in ehed five on King's wharf on Saturday evening before a large attendance of followers of this popular indoor game. Play was of a high standard for finals, where competitors are usually feeling the strain of three days eliminating contests. Parncll players were again the most successful, G. Martin and Miss A. Ellett winning the singles, while I. Ellett won. the combined doubles with Miss K. Waters, of the samo club. C. Ellett won the men's handicap singles, and is also in the final of the C grade combined doubles with Miss Hooper, while J. R. McCrystal and Miss P. Miller won the handicap combined doubles. Central players also did well, winning the two main doubles events, while Miss J, Ramsay, who holds the New Zealand ladies' title, was runner-up to Miss Kllett. Miss D. Newton and Mrs. Wren, of Central Club, were runners-up for the ladies doubles, while H. D. Wilson and Mrs. Wren reached the final of the combined doubles. Martin's poworful smash and clearing ability proved too much for Ivan Ellett, who played clever drop shots and whose concealment earned him many points. Ellett is always at a disadvantage, as Ins height prevents him from getting in much good overhead work, but his short game more than compensates. The ladies' singles was won in two sets, although. Miss Ramay had a chance in the second, when the game was set to 10 all, but she could not stop Miee Ellett, who had been more consistent throughout. Wilson and Weir, who showed better combination than Martin and Rishworth, won the men's doubles in two straight sets, as did Misses Ramsay and Wade in the ladies' doubles. The only outsiders to win any event were Fear and Fow, of Hamilton, the C grade doubles champions. The minor events were all very evenlycontested, only two remaining to be played, which reflects great credit on the committee, who have a difficult task to get oft the 18 events on the programme. At the conclusion of the tournament, the president, Mr. S. Harris, before calling on Mrs E. W. Griffiths to present the trophies, referred to the loss to badminton of Mr. W. C. Cargill (whose death is reported" from Morrineville), who had been a familiar figure at tournaments. Detailed results: — CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. MEN'S SINGLES, A Graae.—Seml-flnals: G. Martin beat H.
