PRINTING APPRENTICES.
VARIATION OF AWARD sought; The Auckland Master Printers' Industrial Union of Employers sought an amendment of the apprenticeship order governing the industry in the Arbitration Court this morning before Mr. Justice Frazer. They asked for a reduction of 20 per cent on present rates of pay. Mr. F>. Aldridge, president of the Auckland Master Printers' Union, and chairman of the Auckland Printing Trade Apprentices' Committee, appeared for the applicants, Messrs. J. M. Hardcastle, G. Clark and P. Wright giving supporting evidence. Mr. F. A. Cleveland, secretary of the Typographical Union, supported by Messrs. Brown and Mclnnarney, of the Related Printing Trades Union, opposed the application. "■Mr! Aldridge said that owing to limitations of clause 56 of the Finance Act of May, 1932, apprenticeship contracts entered into after May 10 could not be varied by magistrates, although magistrates could vary contracts entered into prior to that date. That had created a hiatus as far as the operation of the .apprenticeship order was concerned.
After general evidence in support of the application covering the state of the printing trade had been heard, the Court reserved decision.
