FOR NEW SERVICE.

LARGE "K" ENGINES. NEW PLYMOUTH EXPRESS. STARTING NEXT SUNDAY. Trials with the new "K" type of engine are being made by the Railway Department on longer runs, prior to using the engines to haul the larger trains which will be required after next Sunday when the Taumarunui-New Plymouth express service is to be instituted. The "K's" will be used between Auckland and Taumarunui, and an "A.8." between the junction and New Plymouth. The trip will take just on 12 hours. When the engines first left the workshops they were used only on the goode services. Latterly they were used on shorter passenger runs, and, having proved satisfactory there, they have been tried on the longer run from Tanlnarunui to Auckland. One of these engines took the Limited express from that station to Auckland this morning. Under the new arrangements for the Taumarunui-New Plymouth express, a larger number of cars will be taken from Auckland, anil four will be detached from the train at Taumarunui for the new run. The "1C" engine will be able to haul the four extra cars without the necessity for "banking," that is, assisting engines on steep grades, which is necessary with the engines now in use on the ordinary main trunk. The four extra cars for the new service will be a sleeper, two days cars, and a van. These will bo right in front of the expresses leaving Auckland, immediately behind the engine. The train will be made up in Auckland as for New Plymouth, and when it arrives in Taumarunui the first four vehicles will simply be detached and transferred to the other line. The passengers will not be required to move, and the difficulty of changing trains obviated. The first express from Auckland for the new service will leave on Sunday, September 3,- at 7 p.m. It is scheduled to arrive in New Plymouth at C.I a.m. The express which leaves New Plymouth at 7.10 p.m. will arrive in Auckland at 7.6 a.m. Trains will leave Auckland for New Plymouth on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and New Plymouth for Auckland on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Between Taumarunui and New Plymouth trains will run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and between New Plymouth and Taumarunui on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
