LYONS GOVERNMENT.
Country and United Parties Hopelessly Split.
ELECTION IN THE OFFING. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copy right) (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this clay. The "Sydney Morning Herald" says that when the House of Representatives meets on September 9 the Country party will move for the adjournment immediately, to direct attention to the "harassing actions of taxation officials." This motion is regarded as a grave challenge to the Government, and if carried, will constitute a severe form of censure, taking the business out of the hands of the Ministry. It is stated in Federal political circles that the breach between tlie United Country party and the United Australia party cannot be closed, and if the present Ministry is defeated a composite administration would be impossible. The taxation proposals and the tariff policy are the main causes of dissension.
The Canberra correspondent says that recent events point to the Lyons Government being forced to make an early appeal to the electors on present party lines. The Government cannot be defeated, but it could not survive the slightest defection from its ranks.
