DONATION REQUEST. FIVE APPEALS TURNED DOWN. WAITEMATA POWER BOARD. Five appeals for donations from organisations in the district were turned down by the Waitemata Electric Power Board at a meeting this morning. Requests for donations were received from the Takapuna Citizens' Welfare League, the Birkenhead Queen Carnival Committee, the Northcote Primary School Committee, the Henderson Relief Workers' Association, and the Brown's Bay Unemployed Association. The chairman, Mr. W. R. T. Leighton, pointed out that the board had decided to put aside £50 for the purpose of donations, and he moved that a grant of £5 be made to each of the applicants.

A Member: I think we should be very ' careful how we deal with these requests. .These are probably only the forerunner 'of endless appeals. The manager, Mr. Main, is the man who has to find the money. What has he got to say about it?

Mr. Main remarked that the board had agreed to use the sum of £50 for such donations. How much was granted was entirely a, policy matter for the board. "I think the board should be wary as to how it deals with these applications," he said. "There are between 50 and 60 charitable organisations in our district, and I think the j board should put a limit'on how much lit donates each year."

Mr. J. Macky: If that suggestion is carried out we are going to have an unholy scramble. Everybody will be trying to get in first, and some will be unlucky. Some must miss, and they will probably be just as worthy causes as those who were given donations.

Mr. W. B. Darlow moved an amendment that the board regretted its inability to donate to any of the applicants.

The amendment was carried, and it was further decided to send an explanatory note to the organisations concerned.
