SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The annual meeting of the Onehunga League of Mothers was held on Thursday, when very little change was made in the list of officers, and Mrs. W. Jordan was asked to preside for another year. The annual report ehowed that the membership now stands at 147, and that keen interest is still maintained at the meetings. At the close of the business meeting the children of league members entertained them with songs and recitations.

The monthly meeting of the Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in St. John's Methodist Hall on Thursday afternoon. The president, Miss Read, was in the chair. A very comprehensive report of the New Zealand Alliance convention waa given by Mise Hawkins. Major Gordon, who was the speaker for the afternoon, took for her subject, "The Challenge to Women To-day." Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Laurenson and Mrs. Long.

A bridge party, in aid of the house fund of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, was held in the council's room, Victoria Street West, on Thursday evening. The house committee, comprising Mesdames A. Turner (convener), H. Colwell, C. Dickens, M. Dewing, R. Grieve, J. T. F. Mitchell, N. Nielsen, P. Heath-Preest, R. Smythe and Miss M. H. Baggett, were responsible for the success of the evening. Amongst those playing were: Mesdames H. N. Maddox, E. Soden, Townsend, Gilfillan, E. Bell, K. Ames, de Montalk, Keady, R. Martin, Grace, E. M. Axford, Honeycombe, the Misses D. Wickham and R. Hobbs.

The ladies' committee of the Legion of Frontiersmen held a successful dance on Saturday evening in their new clubrooms, Anzac Avenue. The Order of the Eastern Star held ita usual fortnightly dance on Saturday evening at Renall Street Hall, Ponsonby. Okl-tinio and modern dancing was indulged in to music by MUs Parker's orchestra, and the Scottish dances to the accompaniment of the bagpipes, played by Pipers C. Amor and W. McCombe. Refreshments were handed round, and the evening terminated with the "Thistle Waltz" and "Auld Lang Syne." • ♦,"•• The Ladies' Guild of the Selwyn Anglican Church, at Mangere East, held a dance and card evening in the Mangere East Hall on Saturday night, when there was a good attendance of dancers and card players. Masses of golden wattle made pretty decoration on the stage with the rich green stage curtain as a background. Mrs. J. Gillies and Miss M. Arlington, of Otahuhu, supplied the music. Miss Arlington also rendered two fine violin solos, receiving an ovation for her rendering of "The Rosary," which was played as an encore. Mr. J. E. Broadfoot extended a welcome on behalf of the committee. A Monte Carlo waltz was won -by Mr. and Mrs. F. Leslie, while the card prizes were won by Mr. and Mrs. I. Wilson and Mrs. K. Chapman. • ♦ - * • On the conclusion of the business at St. Andrew's Society Ladies' Auxiliary committee meeting held on Friday, the members of the executive and several guests -were entertained by the president, Mrs. W. Black, at a pleasant afternoon social and tea at the Farmers' reception room. The rooms and tables were prettily arranged with spring flowers and baskets of fern. In welcoming, her guests, Mrs. Black referred to the cordial manner in which the committee members had helped her during the year, and also thanked the several visitors present for their assistance with the programme presented at the ladies' night of the St. Andrew's Society, which had been such a success. During the afternoon items were rendered by the following: Mesdames A. E. Middleton, H. Armstrong Keven, J. Ferguson, M. Fisher and Miss Elfrida Hall. Mrs. W. Tongue, vice-president, on behalf of the ladies, gave thanks to Mrs. Black for her energetic efforts. Among those present were: Mrs. J. W. The Takapuna Boating Clubhouse at Bayswater was gay with flowers, greenery and streamers on Saturday evening .when members of the Takapuna girl guides held their annual dance. The gueets were received by Mrs. James Thompson, district commissioner, who wore a frock of powder blue taffeta, assisted by members of the guide committee. Among those present were: Mrs. J. W. Members of the Melrose Park Tennis Club held their annual dance in the Pirate Shippe, Milfonl, on Saturday evening, when their splendid organising efforts were rewarded by a large attendance of dancers. A varied programme of modern arid old-time, dances, including the popular veletas, niaxinas, two and three steps received many encores. Novelty dances, when carnival hats and streamers were distributed, added further brightness to an already gay scene.
