RIVER SCHEME.
WHANGAPE WIDENING
MINISTER IN THE WAIKATO. LAND NOW WATERLOGGED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. A scheme to widen and deepen the Whangape stream, joining the Waikato River and Lake Whangape, at a cost of between £6000, and £7000, was brought before the Minister of Works, the Hon. J. Bitchener, by a deputation of settlers at Rangiriri on Saturday. The Minister was accompanied by Messrs. D. S. Reid, M.P., H. W. Wilson, chairman, K. M. Wright, engineer, and W. Murray, riding member respectively of the Raglan County Council. It was stated that the proposed improvement would not only greatly benefit settlers in tho area, but would also bring in thousands of acres of land which was now waterlogged.
The Minister viewed the stream in a launch and promised to investigate the matter thoroughly. He said he recognised the great potentialities of the area from the settlement standpoint.
