THEFT OF BENZINE.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. ! MAN GIVEN HARD LABOUR. "Why you did it I don't know, and what you have done with the proceeds I do not know," said Mr. Justice Herdman in sentencing Walter John Baskiville to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, at the Supreme Court this morning. The prisoner had been remanded for medical observation, and his counsel, Mr. Vialoux, this morning said that the medical report etated that there was no medical reason why Baskiville should not undergo a moderate period of imprisonment. His Honor said the prisoner had stolen £230 17/ worth of benzine from the Public Works Department. He would take into consideration the fact that prisoner had not been previously convicted. "But for' this offence you appear to have a good record," said his Honor. "Nevertheless, I cannot see my way to grant you probation."
