SEASIDE REST HOME.
"WHITNEYDALE" OPENED. GIFT TO CITY MISSION. In almost ->a summer atmosphere "Whitneydale," the convalescent home at Campbell's Bay, the gift of Mrs. C A Whitney to the Auckland City Mission was officially opened on Saturday afternoon. Fully furnished and set in a spacious garden, the home overlooks the gulf, and its value as a resting place for the tired and nerve-racked could be fully appreciated on such a glorious day. The city niissioner, the Rev. Jasper Calder, in'expressing appreciation of the gift,- said that in addition to its boon for the patients there was the inestimable encouragement it had given to the army of workers for the mission. Dr H. Barraclough, medical officer of the mission, and Mr. E. H. Sutherland, president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, also expressed their appreciation of Mrs. Whitney's benevolence.
The opinion that the City Mission had done more than any other organisation ' he knew to uplift the fallen in Auckland, was expressed by Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the. Auckland Hospital Board. He paid a tribute to the work of Mr. Calder, and stressed the interest he had shown in the returned ..soldiers.
In expressing his appreciation of the remarks, Mr. C. A. Whitney emphasised that the gift would not be a selfsupporting one. He thought a fund for its upkeep would be provided by the public of and he had much pleasure in giving £>0 to start that fund. Mrs. Whitney, he said, fully realised the work of the mission and hoped that the home would be the means of helping many poor and needy in the future. „ Mrs. Whitney released from the flagpole a long pennant bearing the name "Whitneydale," and after Archdeacon G. Mac Murray. had pronounced a benediction upon the home, the large gathering .sang the National Antlium. Tin; visitors were then entertained at afternoon tea. I . . ;
