ABOLISH SENATE.

Probable Issue at Forced Irish Election.

PITIFUL PLIGHT OF FARMERS. LONDON, August 17. Tho Dublin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says it is realised now that tho Irish Free State Government may decide to force an election with the abolition of the Senate as the main objective. This will win much support.

On the other hand, however, Mr. de Valera has lost support by the revival of the Public Safety Act and the suggestion that a surtax will be imposed on incomes of more than £2000. This would affect about 2000 taxpayers.

The Dail may reassemble to consider the situation, but it is believed that the Government will withdraw its bill and impose a surtax estimated to realise £300,000.

A striking example of the plight of the farmers was given on the opening day of the autumn sheep sales in the capital, says the Dublin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph." Only 52 sheep were sold out of 1000, and some lots brought no bids, while others went at 12/ and 13/ a head.

The highest price paid was a guinea each for Cheviot ewes, but only 20 were sold at that figure.
