PUKEKOHE AFFAIRS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS

WAIKATO RIVER WATER SUPPLY.

The Mayor, Mr. John Routljv presided at the regular meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council.

The No. 2 District Highways Council advised that it had allocated £873 toward the maintenance of the four main highways in the borough, which meant the borough had to find £289. The Mayor stated that this amount was £139 in excess of what the council had anticipated, but it would foe good business to expend the amounts mentioned by the district council on -maintenance.

The Health Department reported that a bacteriological examination of a sample of the Pukekohe water had proved same to be pure.

The foreman was asked to give an estimate of the damage to roads in the borough by county council lorries, with a view to recovering the amount of such damage.

The council decided to accept £15 for its share of the timber in the old bridge over the Waikato River at Tuakau. It was stated that Pukekohe's contribution to the new structure was £1291 16/3, of which all but £116 16/3 had been paid.

Provided property owners, who will derive a direct benefit are prepared to contribute something toward the overhead costs of the work, the widening and deepening of the section of Paerata Creek which passes through the borough, is to be put in hand. Unemployed relief work will be engaged.

Mr. H. E. Kissling, who was elected to fill a vacancy on the council caused/-by the departure of Mr. J. P. Rae from the district, was welcomed by the Mayor, and appointed to the works and library committees.

A suggestion that the Domain and recreation ground be called Bledisloe Park was made by Mr. K. Brown. Action was deferred pending the legal position being investigated.

The special committee set up to consider the proposals of the Waikato River Water Supply Company to supply Pukekohe's water requirements, repotted that, while it regarded the scheme favourably, the company was not able to submit any proposition with which Pukekohe's water requirements would be delivered to the present reservoirs at the same or at less cost than was incurred annually on the existing pumping plant. The committee expressed the opinion that the present water supply scheme should not be varied in any direction as would involve the ratepayers in much additional expense.
