At the annual meeting of the- Dominion Road branch of the League of Mothers, held recently, the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Barnes (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs; Sims ; secretary, Mrs. C. N. Creeks (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs. Goble. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting, the presentation of a birthday cake was made to the president, Mrs. Barnes. A musical programme was provided by Mrs. Vercoe, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Grace, Miss Robinnon and Miss Carrick. Afternoon; tea was then served by Mesdames Munus.and Parks. «■ # * *

The Grey Lynn branch of the League of Mothers held its annual meeting on Wednesday, 16th, in St. Columba Hall, Surrey Crescent. Mrs. Hynes presided over a good attendance, the president and lion, secretary.of the provincial committee also being present. The election of officers resulted as follows:. President, Mrs. Hynes; vice-presidents, Mesdames Halls and McKenzie; hon. secretary, Mrs. Porter; hon. treasurer, Mrs. Adair; magazine secretary, Mrs. Buchanan; librarian, Mrs. Heath; reporter, Mrs. Jean Boswell; committee, Mesdames Hobson, Dunn,- Holmes, Trenwith, Watson and . Hogwood. After the election, Mrs. Whyte, provincial secretary, gave an interesting address on "Running the Home on a Co-operative, Basis."

There took place last evening at the King's Theatre, Northcote, the annual parish dance in - connection with St. John the Baptist Church. Extras were played by Mesdames N. R. Harris and C.J. W. The Onehunga Free Kindergarten Parents' Social Club gave a successful party and dance in the Foresters' Hart, Onehunga, on Tuesday evening,-to members and friends. The hostesses for the evening being Mrs. Rawlinsou.aml Mrs. McGuire. The programme was varied, the principal item being "The Bishop's Candlesticks," founded on an incident in Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables," and staged by Mr. H.-G. Woods, assisted by Miss G. Langford, Miss J. Begg, Mr. H. Boy and Mr. Lovall. Advantage was taken of the gathering to say farewell and to make several .presentations to Miss N. Benshaw, assistant director, who has resigned, and is leaving shortly for (Sydney. Mrs. D. Cuthbert, the 7>resident of the school committee, and Mrs. Rawlineon, the president of the social club, when making presentations to Miss Benshaw spoke of the valuable services given, and of the high esteem in which Miss Benshaw is held by all connected with the school. An interesting item on the programme was the crowning of the Onehunga Free Kindergarten prosperity queen. This item was given by three of the school children aged between three and four years. Mrs. Cuthbert gave some particulars of the working of the school, and stated that the committee could s,ee; its way to continue the, school next year. •. .' j

A successful bridge and 500 card party was held in the clubrooms of the Catholic Women's League last evening, when a largo number of players were present. A large bowl of arum lilies, and vases of jonquils, daffodils and Icelaud, poppies made attractive decorations. The guests were received by the president, Mrs. M. Pilling, assisted by the table hostesses, Mesdames Black, H. Wright, Everett, Leaning, G. A. Black, Main, Stichbury, Teacy, Misses Scott, Wells, Knock, Jeynn, Fitzpatriek, Higgins and Bryant. Conveners were Mesdames R. Cruickshank, Everett, Meyers, Misses .Bryant and Higgins. Prize winners were Mesdames Blaikie, Everett and Lorimer, bridge; and Mrs. Bryant, 500.

On Wednesday morning, the executive committee and the mothers of the children of the Otahuhu Free Kindergarten were the gueste of the directors, Miss M. Morrilleau and Miss N. Lane, at a delightful little party held in the kinder-garten^-Prineess Street, Otahuhu. The directors were assisted by Mesdames Montgomery, Carson, Kemp and Warrington, of the parents' committee. The rooms were tastefully decorated with bowls of loveiy carnations, daffodils and camellias. Songs were sung by the children, the main item being "Three Blind Mice,". sung by the school, with little Bernice Hayden as conductor. The members of the executive present were: The Mayoress, Mrs. H. T. Clements, Mesdames Snadden, Hain, Coutts, Neileon, Misses Colegrave, Muir and Bradley. Among, other mothers present: Mesdames Mayo, Hayden, Wood, Cunnold, Moyle, McAnulty, Snale, Somer.ville, Shadwick, Forder, Holmes, Austin, McKelvie, Linder, Turner, Handling, Watson, Dawson, Lane, Hatching, Steele, Gordon, Ellis, Balson and Taylor.

The annual meeting of the Papatoetoe branch of the girl guide movement was held in the Presbyterian Hall, Shirley Road, on Tuesday evening, when Mrs. Teape, the district ■ commissioner, presided. . The- following officers were elected:—President, Mrs. F. E. Carr; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. J. Nicholson, O. Kay, L. W. England, Quinn, Misses J. Runcinian and Hart; secretary, Miss L. On behalf of the committee,.Mrs. Nicholson thanked the retiring president, Mrs,,T. Partridge, for her untiring services during the past four years. After the business of the evening a social programme, including songs by Mrs. Quinn, elocutionary items by Miss L. Roseveare and Mis 6 Z. Richards, and folk dances by the guides and brownies, was carried out, while supper closed the meeting.

A plain and fancy masked ball was given by the Otahuhu Unemployed Social Club in the Otahuhu Public Hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. Grey Campbell, of Auckland, and Mrs. Albert Russell were the judges of the fancy stall, and awarded the prizes to Miss Hilliard and Mr. Jones. Miss Ethel Griffiths was adjudged winner of the children's section. The dance programme, which was in the hands of Messrs. Utanley and Wheeler, included a spot waltz, which was won by Mr. Healey and Miss McDonnell, and a Monte Carlo waltz, the winners of which were Mr. P. Jones and partner. A card tournament was held for the non-dancers, in which Mrs. Speed was first and Mrs. McDonnell second, in the laides' section, while in the gentlemen's section Mr. J. Haslip was first and Mr. J. Gardiner second. After a brief speech by the president of the club, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, the prizes were presented to the successful competitors by the Mayoress, Mrs. H. j T. Clements. (

A very pleasant afternoon gift party 'was held yesterday at the residence of Mrs. B. G. Leydon, of Hurstmere Road, Takapuna, in aid of the forthcoming bazaar of St. George's Women's Society. The drawing room was decorated with anemones in bright shades of crimson, blood red and purple, yellow daffodils and narcissi. The joint hostesses were Mesdames T. Hanna and Russell. Miss Ella Weston was the winner of an amusing competition, and an entertaining musical programme was supplied by Mrs. Glover, Mrs. M. L. Wilkins and Mrs. R. Sims. A social evening was given at Muriwai House on Tuesday by Miss Louie Coster, in aid of the Waimanku Amusement Club. Mks Coster received the guests in a frock of apple green erope de chine, with a. black velvet bridge coat trimmed with white fur. A short lecture on the Waitakere Ranges, illustrated by lantern slides, was given by Mr. Greenhow, also several humorous items at the piano. Dancing, games and competitions were enjoyed. The various prizes, which were presented by Mrs. Greenhow. were won as follows: Motor car competition, Mr. W. R. Collins; .Monte Carlo, Miss Isabel Wiglitman and Mr. Alan Coster; spot waltz, Mrs. C Fletcher and Mr. W. R. Collins.

A pleasant evening was spent on Wednesday by members and friends of the New Zealand Pekingese and Persian Cat Club, at Miss Spencer's studio, Symonds. ville. The communal rooms, Bowcn Avenue, presented a happy picture on Thursday, when a successful bridge afternoon was held in aid of funds for maintaining the New Zealand Infant Welfare Centre in Tel-Aviv, Palestine. Spring (lowers in profusion decorated the main hall where the tables were set for bridge and mah jong and also in the supper room where a delectable afternoon tea was served. The guests were received by the president of the New Zealand Women's Zionist Society, Mis. David Nathan, who wore a smart black frock with touches of red, small black velvet hat and black furs. The committee responsible for the arrangements for the function were Mrs. A. Astor (convener), Miss V. Ziman, Mrs. A. Follick, Miss E. Keesing and Miss Mendelssohn. The programme entitled "Shows and Shadows" attracted a large attendance on Wednesday evening,' when the Avon Circle held their monthly gathering in the Penwomcn's rooms. Mrs.. Helen Griffiths, president, told of her interesting experiences in London some years ago, when she met Sir Henry Irving, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Mr. Hall Caine, Mr. Brara Stoker and others, and skilfully pictured the brilliant theatres and shows as compared to the poverty and distress of slum life. Mr. and Mrs. H. Bolitho were the guests of honour, and Mrs. Bolitho was presented with a charming bouquet of spring flowers. The programme included items by Miss Doris Messer, from "Barnaby Rudge" in character, and Mrs. Norman Crimp (Whangarei), who rendered some delightful bird imitations. Miss Phyllis Mobberly contributed a ten-minute turn of monologues and music, and dramatie selections were given by Misses Madge' and Ethel Horn. A clever sketch, "The Burglar," was presented by Miss Daphne Mortensen. Other pleasing items included "The London Toy Seller". (Leah Roseveare), Japanese sketches (Ina and Nance Targuse), "The Crumpled Dress" (Mrs. Matthews), a pantomome ballad by D. Messer and P. McLaughlin, and humorous sketch, "Farmer Brown's Daughters," by., D- Messer, D. Mortensen, V. Gee, M. Kciuble, D. Badcock, L. Roseveare and Wallace Gill. Artistic vocal solos were rendered by Mrs. Stormont and Miss Doreen Adkins, and violin selections by Master James Molloy. The accompaniments were played by Madame Humphrey Steward, Mrs. Grace and Miss Violet Robinson.

A morning tea was given in the Lyceum Club to-day by Mrs. John Beid and Miss Jessie Beid, chairman of the executive of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Union, in honour of the New Zealand team of lady golfers who are leaving for Melbourne on the Wanganella to take part in the Australian championship tournament. The rooms were attractively decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies, anemones and daffodils, while a blazing fire lent an added cheery note. The guests were received by Mrs. Beid and Miss Jessie Beid.
