ARREST OF HOTELKEEPER.
CROWD BECAME HOSTILE.
(By Telegraph.—rrcss Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, tliis day.
As a sequel to an argument over a bet with another man on the Riccarton racecourse on Saturday, William Brown, aged 54, hotelkeepeer, of Greymouth, was this morning fined 10/" for drunkenness, and £3 for using obscene language, in default fourteen days gaol.
The police stated that after the arrest of Brown the crowd became hostile, and there was difficulty in getting Brown awav.
The magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, said tho hostility of the crowd was' a bad feature. The police were the best friends of tho crowd, and to evince hostility was simply ridiculous. It showed how the public could misconceive action of this kind. <
