LADY VOGEL DEAD.
Link With Early New Zealand History. WIDOW OF NOTED POLITICIAN. LONDON, August 13. The death has occurred of Lady Vogel, widow of tho former New Zealand Premier and Agent-General. Lady Vogel was formerly Miss Mary Clayton, daughter of Mr. W. A. Clayton, colonial architect. She married Sir Julius in 1867. Her husband was twice Premier of New Zealand—from 1873 to 1875, and for six and a half months in 1876—and was a member of several other Ministries,' his last important portfolio being that of Colonial Treasurer in the Stout-Vogel Government from 1884 to 1887. He represented various electorates in Parliament in the course of his long and notable political career, including Auckland City East from 1871 to 1875. He resigned his last seat—Christchurch North—in 18S9. He was AgentGeneral in London from 1876 to 1881. He died in London in March, 1899. Mrs. N. Alfred Nathan, of Auckland, is a niece of Lady Vogel.
