DAVIS CUP. SOMERVILLE AND ST. LUKE'S LEVEL. The two rounds of the Davis Cup competition finished on Saturday with St. Luke's and Somerville lefel. An exciting game was witnessed when St. Luke's won by three goals to two against Training College Somerville, giving one of thenpoorest displays of the season, playing against North Shore, who were two men short, were lueky to win by three goals to one. In a struggle marked by a poo? display of hockey, yet full ot exciting incidents, University beat Papatoetoe by six goals to live. The following table shows the positions

A rally down the left by Lawrv' took play to Papatoetoe, when the centre was intercepted by Lusby. The reds advanced, Woods finishing the movement bv netting. Papatoetoe 2, 'Varsitv 0. Racing to the attack, 'Varsity gained a footing in the circle, where A. Broun missed tin easy goal. An attack by 'Varsitv from the right ended in Burnett missing the net. Sinythenian raised the reds' hopes, only to be stopped by Robinson, and play drifting to Papatoetoe's end from a centre by Lawry, Burnett connected nml goaled. Papatoetoe 2, 'Varsity 1. A rally bv Hamilton looked promising until Robinson stopped progress. 'Varsity, headed by Philpotts, then raced to the circle, Brnun finishing by netting. Papatoetoe 2. 'Varsity 2. After another strong attack, Philpotts found the net. 'Varsity 8, Papatoetoe 2. The reds then moved to tbe blues' end, gained a corner, but that was intercepted, and play was on the quarter-line until Ross sent out to Lawry, who centred, and N. Broun connecting netted. Attack and counter attacks marked the opening stages upon resuming till Papatoetoe gained a penalty corner without result. The reds continued to press from the right until a mishap to Broun held up play. Restarting Philpotts broke through, crosshit to Lawry, who centred, and Burnett goaled. University 5, .Papatoetoe 2. A series of attacks by Papatoetoe followed, and from sernmbling play Williams netted. University 5, Papatoetoe 3. Papatoetoe were quickly back to the circle, and from close play Moore netted. The students went through from the bully, and Broun netted. University C>. Papatoetoe 4. Bay sent the red vanguard in motion, and from Moore's centre Wood netted. SOMERVILLE V. SHORE. North Shore were two short In a game that opened quietly, still they made the lirst real inrasion. Twice Hedges cleared and from a roll in Shore were forced. Then a long lilt caused another twenty-five. An exchange of hits between Parker and Smith gave Wilmott a chance to get the ball away. Somervtlle took the attack in a lethargic sort .of way, but Seccombe was unable to find the goal. Play gravitated to the other end, where Vail stopped a shot by Anthony and Somerville at last were goal-hunting in earnest, E. Watts scoring. Somerville 1, North Shore 0. Until half-time play remained in North Shore territory. A couple of invasiofls marked the opening stages of the second spell and Rankin almost allowed a shot from E. Watts to trickle past. Some hard slogging enabled Logan and Jones to effect u clearance. Anthony picked up a hard centre which Just missed the goal. McNab and Heard set Somerville In motion again. A shot by E. Watts was sent to the sideline by Rankin. Play hung in North Shore quarters until M. Jones put In a eood run along the right and from his centre H. Jones rocked a fast one Into the net. Somerville 1, North Shore 1. Another attack looked dangerous, but the ball was deflected and Somerville retaliated strongly. E. Watts ran Somerville to the circle, where Glanvllle shot fast and accurately, but Rankin saved and he did likewise from further efforts. E. Watts again invaded the circle, but Parker snoilt his shot and Scceomba then failed. However Somerville were not to be denied and E. Watts poked the hall into the net Somerville 2, North Shore 1. Somerville increased the lead, C. Watts scoring just before time was called. Somerville 3 North Shore 1 Messrs. R. and R. C. Avery umpired.
