CIVIC LEAGUE.

The monthly meeting or the Auckland Civic League held on Friday and presided over by Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, was well attended by niembe*«. Apologies for the absence of Mcsdames Neil, Oxford and Blomley were received, and a largo amount of correspondence was dealt with. A letter was received from Mr. Arthur Saintsbury, requesting the league's co-operation in getting legislation making the foreclosing on life insurance policies illegal, and pointing out the steps being, taken by other societies, and giving instances of the results of foreclosing on premiums. It was decided to hold the matter over for further consideration. The society of the Auckland Federation of the Women's Institutes of New Zealand wrote reminding members of the league that an Auckland centre had been formed, and inviting members. A letter from the ratepayers and residents of St. Helier's and Tamakij protesting against the proposal of the. Auckland Drainage Board to remove the city's drainage outfall to Brown's Island, and requesting further investigation was' received, and the protest was warmly supported. Referring to a recent court case in Wellington, where a man who was being prosecuted for / hammering a cat, was dismissed "because his action did not come within the statute," members of the Civic League decided to forward an emphatic protest to the Minister of Justice, decrying such a travesty of justice, and asking for such legal quibbles to be done away with. Some time was devoted to the question of women in Parliament. An extract from a report supplied by Miss Newton, .of the New Zealand National Council of Women, was read. The report drew attention to the fact that in fecent years Germany had 39 women in the National "Assembly, 155 in Parliament and Federated Governments, and 4,000 on various loral and municipal boards. In the United States of America there were, in the last election, three candidates for the Senate, 28 for the House of Representatives, two for State Govern' ments, and 67 for Federated Governments.
