SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

One- of the prettiest sights at the crowning of the Queen in the Town Hall on Friday evening was the word "Prosperity," -which was depicted by a. number of young girls, the pupils ' of Madame Baird, all dressed in white. They walked on, each representing a letter of the word in which everyone is interested, till the whole stood before the audience - as a living picture. * * » #

A delightful part}- was lield at Mrs. Gray's residence at Devonport recently to celebrate her son's thirteenth birthday. Mrs. Gray wore a frock of black crepe de chine and was assisted by Mrs. G. West, who wore a frock of maroon crepe de chine; Miss M. Martin, green crinkle crepe with white cape; Miss P. Gray, pink crush velvet. Among those present were: Misses Jewell Dryland, Peggy Crosher, Leita Preston, Madeline Hill, Nancy Knight, Pat Mellor, Beverly O'Xeil, Joan Herbert, Dorothy Smith.

The musical cirle of the Overseas Club met in the clubrooms, when the evening was given entirely by members of the circle, and a most enjoyable programme was presented. Madame Aile'en Johns presided and introduced the performers. Two interesting musical competitions were provided by Miss Alice Law and Miss Fraser. The evening opened with a pianoforte solo, "Prelude" (Debussy), by Miss Joyce Hewitt; a contralto solo, "I Got a Robe," a negro spiritual, was sweetly sung by MissDunnett; two vocal soli, "Lascia ch'io pianga" r (Handel) and "My Lovely Delia" (Bane Wilson), were given by Miss Helene Dykes, followed by "Pot Pourri:" a ten minutes entertainment by Miss Phyllis Mobberly; and a vocal solo, "Away in Athlone" (Herman Lohr), by Mr." Wallace Gill. Mrs. Anne Morris acted as accompanist for the vocalists. Supper concluded the evening.

A pleasant afternoon was spent at the Fabian Club room on Tuesday last, when a number of the old members of the New Zealand section of the Women's International League gathered together for the purpose of reorganising the section. A letter was received from the international secretary at Geneva expressing' the executive's desire that the section should carry on as usual. A recently formed Women's Peace Society at Hastings wrote suggesting affiliation which met with cordial agreement. A motion of regret and sympathy' with the relatives of the late Mr. McCombs was carried, members standing in silence, also one with the relatives of Mr. Gurr, who had occasionally! addressed the league on Samoan questions during his sojourn in Auckland. Mrs. Rowlatt, who has been acting as organiser, was unanimously elected president for the ensuing year, Mrs. Wynn recording secretary, Mrs. Gibson correspondence secretary, and a' committee of six. Afternoon tea concluded a happy gathering ' of ; old : friends.

Mrs: J. Clarke' and ' members of the Hillsboro' Croquet Club held a card party -last Thursday in Milne and Choyce's. • The guests werewelcomed by Mrs. Clarke. The bridge prizes were won by Miss Dagmar Von Zglinieki, and thd hidden* number by Mrs. Berrif, and the 500 by Mrs. R. Buckle and Mrs. Wilson. There was a large attendance at the monthly gathering 1 of the Birkenhead Women's Association. Mrs. A. E. Wood occupied .the ,chair. .The. following resolution was unanimously carried:" "The Birkenhead Women's Association urges the Minister of .Finance to keep faith with' the organisers of the obstetric appeal sand-" the public, who subscribed £25,000 on the strength ,of the definite promise by the Government to build an obstetric hospital at Dunedin, which' is so urgently needed.". An. excellent musical programme, arranged by Mesdames W. B: Darlow andß. Stone; was enjoyed, and comprised songs, by Mrs.-R. Stone, Miss K. Christie, .Mr. R. Simmers, duets by Mrs: B. Stone and Miss K.' Christie, and ,by Mrs. Stone (Miss Rita'McCu'llay) and Mr. R. Simmers. The accompanists were Miss Dorothy Simmers and Mrs. Lysaght. The winners of the competitions were Miss I. Gilflllan and Mr. W. F. Havill. A collection in support of the Birkenhead queen in the dental clinic carnival was generously responded to.

An interesting evening was spent by the members and supporters of the Richmond Rovers Football Club, when a five hundred tournament was held at the Grey Lynn Bowling Club's pavilion on "Wednesday. Prizes were ' won by Mrs. Farmer and Mrs. Bryant, Mr. Mills and Mr. E. Caddy. The combined prize was won by Mrs. Farmer, and the hidden number by Mrs. W. Dick and Mr. Andrews. Spring time was shown by the bowls of lovely daffodils and violets used as decorations. The bridge prize was won by Mrs. E, Pattpn, the 500 being won by Mrs. G. Nixon and the hidden number by Mrs. W. Everitt, while Mrs. W. Morton and Mrs. Rogers were the winners of the consolation prizes. Mrs. W. Morton, president of the club, presented the trophies to the successful players. The Remuera branch of the Auckland Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary held its monthly meeting on the 10th inst., when Mrs. J. H. Can- was in the chair. After the business was attended to Mrs. 11. P. Berry gave a talk, taking as her subject "The Song of the Syrian Guest." Final arrangements were also made for the lantern lecture on the Maori mision work to be given bv Sister Eleanor Dobbic on Tuesday.

A largo number of friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Runeiman, of Papatoctoe, on Thursday afternoon, to bid farewell to Captain and Mrs. A. Garland, who are leaving the district. Mr. and Mrs. Garland were presented witli a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, and as a token of the esteem in which they were held the presentation of a cut glass crystal set was made by Mrs. Runeiman. The singing of good fellowship songs closed the afternoon.

The annual dance of the North Shore Rugby Football Club was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday evening, when a large'nujmber of dancers attended. The hall was .gay with palms,, flowers and greenery, while the colours of the club were introduced wherever possible., The supper tables downstairs were decorated with roses and howls of yellow and white jonquils, violets, and daffodils. The first annual dance of the Dunholme Lawn Tennis Club was held on Tuesday evening in the Amateur Operatic Hall. The club colours, green, white and gold, were carried out in the floral

decorations of the hall. Bowls of mimosa, daffodils and arum lilies formed a background for a replica of the club badge, which was mounted on the stage. The thirty-second annual dance of (.lie Franklin Oddfellows was held in the Otahuhu Public Hall on Wednesday evening.
