BRITISH ACCOUNTANTS.
I read with interest the article in the "Star" on British accountants. As long as I can remember the firm of Price, Waterhouse and Company, of Old Jewry, was the foremost of its kind in London, and evidently it has retained its position. Over thirty years ago its American representatives were Jones, Ceaser and Company, accountants. New 1 ork. This firm's right-hand man was Mr. William Reay, whose father was a partner in the firm of Price, Waterhouse and Company. The firm of Jones, Ceaser and Company was always engaged by the Pierpont Morgan Company to form the American trusts. In 1901 the International Harvester Trust was formed by the merging of the. McCormick, Deering, Osborn. Piano and Milwaukee Harvesting Machine Companies, And Mr. Reay undertook the job. When Cyrus McCormick, the sou of the man who invented the reaper and binder, ayid Charles Deering, who between them held the controlling interest, failed to agree as to who should be the controller of the 1.H.T., a position with a large salary attached, Mr. Pierpont Morgan, to whom the matter had been referred, promptly decided against- both nominees and appointed the young Englishman. Mr. Reay. During a visit to the London office of the International Harvester Trust. Mr. Reay informed the writer that Jones, Ceaser and Company was the leading firm of accountants in America and he believed that this was due to the.fact that his firm had adopted the English policy, which was recognised as- the best in the world.
