CORNER FOR BUSY BEES

LITTLE SOCKS FOR BABY. WORK FOR KNITTERS. (Conducted by TINKERBELL.) Dear Girls, — It is really quite a while now since we did any knitting, but I know your interest Has not lessened, , fox every mail brings requests for special patterns of jumpers and berets, etc. The little first-size sox in the illustration below look very nice knitted in cream, and I do not think aijy of my Busy Bees should find much difficulty in making them. Mother will help you with the heel if you cannot

quite manage it, or if you are In difficulties and you care to drop me a little note I will see what I can do. To make these socks you will require loz of 3-ply Scotch fingering wool and four steel needles No. 16. Measurements: Length to h£el, 5J inches. Length of foot, 4J inches. Tension: 11 stitches to one inch in width and 16 rows to one inch in depth measured after pressing. Cast on 48 stitches 16 stitches on each of three needles, and work round in knit two and purl two rib for 1 i inches, then change to plain knitting until the work measures 4J inches from beginning. Begin heel as follows:— Knit first 12 stitches of round and slip last 12 stitches on other end of same needle. These 24 stitches are for heel. Divide all other stitches between two needles and leave for instep. On heel stitches' (always slipping first stitch) purl 24, turn, knit 2.3, turn, purl 22, turn, knit 21, turn. Continue in this way until 7 stitches are left at each side of heel (last row will be purl 10), then turn, knit 10, pick up right-hand side of loop just before eleventh stitch and knit 2 stitches together, thus preventing a hole. Turn, purl 11, pick up loop just • before 12th stitch and purl 2 together. Continue in this way, working 1 extra stitch on each row until all 24 stitches are on one row again (last row will be a purl row). Knit back 12 stitches, thus completing heel. Slip 24 instep stitches on to one needle. Take spare needle, knit remaining 12 stitches of heal and knit up 2 stitches at side of heel. With a second needle knit instep stitches. With a third needle knit up two stitches at side of and other 12 heel stitches. Knit

measures 3a inches, then begin shaping for toe as follows:

First round: Knit first needle. On second needle knit 1, slip 1, knit I, pass slip stitch over, knit to last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. Knit third needle plain.

Second round: (Knit to last 3 stitches of- first needle, knit 2 together, knit 1. Work as first round on second needle.. On third needle knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over and knit to end of. needle. Work 2 rounds plain.) Repeat bracketed instructions until only 20 stitches remain in round, then knit stitches on first needle on to third. Either cast off two needles together or graft stitches. Press with a warm iron and damp cloth. KNITTING HINTS WANTED. In a week or so I hope to publish in this column a number of knitting hints which are likely to prove of help to learners, as well as to advanced knitters. Busy Bees are therefore invited to send in any useful knitting hints, and these we will publish if they are considered to be reliable.
