PLUCKY CLERK.
BEATS BANDIT WITH OWN BLUDGEON. After finishing liis work Jit 2 a.m., Walter Hunks, of Wood Street, Mitehani (Surrey), fought and defeated a masked bandit with his own bludgeon, then calmly cycled home. Hanks is the booking clerk at Epsom Downs station on the Southern Railway, and as he came out of the dimly lit office he saw a man in a corner. Suffering from cuts and bruises, Mr. Hanks lay in bed next morning and told how he tackled the raider. "I saw as I turned that the man was holding a heavy piece of wood above his head, about to strike lie from behind. I had a glimpse of the mask and then there was a blank for a few moments. The next I remember was that we were struggling on the ground. I manag.d to get the piece of wood away from him and then we got to our feet still struggling. He broke away and I chased him in the darkness across the station yard. I hit him two or three times with the wood and we had another wrestle before he finally ran away across the downs. Ho was about sft Oin tall, and was wearing an overcoat and a cap."
