CHESS.
MORRINSVILLE TEAMS' MATCH. - (From Our Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, Friday. A match for teams of 16 a-side was played at the Morrinsville Chess Club's rooms last evening by a team from the "Hamilton Chess Club and a combined team from the Morrinsville and Te Arolia Clubs.. Hamilton won nine games and Morrinsville seven. Chief interest centred in the game between Bullock, the Hamilton champion, and R. Fen ton, the Morrinsville top player. A keen battle of wits ended in Fenton winning after three hours of play. Mr. Fenton is 21 and has only taken up the game in the last two years. Bullock, with white, attacked strongly, but met with a solid defence. Fenton with a neat trap won a pawn, and although having to sacrifice has last piece to stop a pawn queening, was left in an impregnable position with three passed pawns. Results, with Hamilton players first and players of the combined team denoted by (M) for Morrinsville and (T) for Te Aroha, are as follow:—Bullock lost to R. Fenton (M), Hirst beat A. Burton (T), Stevenson beat J. Hopkins (M), Wilson lost to Mannington (T), Mears beat A. Gifford (M), Jones lost to J. Smith (T), Shaw lost to Perrott (T), Tompkins beat B. L. Montgomerie (T), Fink, sen., beat N. G. McLeod (T), Fink, jun., beat H. Rowbotham (T), Clothier beat P. S. Philpott (M), Standrin lost to F. Schell (T), Avery lost to B. O'Brien (M), Larney beat J. Boswell (T), Hunter lost to A. J. Park (M), Meredith beat C. J. Porter (T). =
