GERMAN WORKLESS.

Stimulation of Great National

"Faith Cure."

ARTIFICIAL METHODS?

LONDON, August 10.

The Berlin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says a decrease of 400,000 in Germany's unemployed is announced. This brings the total to 4,456,000. However, says the correspondent, the figures must not be judged on the standards of other countries. Apart from huge Government contracts and relief works, many kinds of demand for labour are being stimulated artificially as part of a great national "faith cure."

For example, the entire chemical industry in the Bitterfeld district has promised to increase staffs 15 per cent before August 25 and to keep them in employment for six months, the men not to work longer than 40 hours a week. In return, the Government offers employers help from Government relief funds.
