STRONG AUCKLAND TEAM

NORTHLANDERS ARE CONFIDENT

The team chosen by the Auckland selectors to oppose Northland at Carlaw Park on Saturday undoubtedly is the best thirteen, back to forward, picked to wear the blue and white colours this season, and it is very evident that the selectors have a high regard for the calibre of the coming visitors. From reports to hand, this is well justified, for Northland will step out in winning vein. This season (writes our Northland representative) the standard of play in Northland has been very high, and the games have been exciting and full of interest. The Northland representatives were selected over five weeks ago, and have since been training hard. They have also played two matches together, in which the combination of the backs was very flattering to the selector, Mr. P. Little. The• forwards are big solid men, and this season will see Northland sound both front and rear. Auckland will need its very best available team to stave oil defeat. Mr. Jack Jones, the South Auckland captain and international, has been coaching the Northland pack, and will be present on Saturday to see the team in action. The forwards are the weightiest Northland has fielded,'and are all solid grafters. Northland wants the ball from the scrums, and hopes to rattle up a score if it is successful in this respect. The Northlanders have met Auckland on Carlaw Park on three occasions. The first game Auckland won by a point, the second by five points, and the third match was drawn 21 all. Northland were again beaten by a point for the Northern Union Cup last season by South Auckland, and are now confident they will lower xiuckland's eolours this week-end. AFFAIRS OF REFEREES. The Auckland Rugby League Referees' Association met last evening, Mr. A. Ball presiding over a good attendance. Complaint was made about the poorness of the "exhibition" match between Newton and Ponsonby at Ellerslie on Saturday. ■ It was stated that Ponsonby turned out largely with juniors, and the game, according to the referee, Mr. Wetherill, did harm rather than good to the code. The matter is to be reported to the Board of Control, with a suggestion that the Ponsonby Club should be asked to account for the failure. Another member also pointed out that some of the house matches that took place were no credit. The appointments committee advised that referees were arranged for as a courtesy.
