Headed by the band of the Grenadier Guards playing war-time songs, 1100 survivors of the "Contemptible Little -Army" assembled from all parts of the British Isles and marched to the Cenotaph, which was decorated with wreaths in memory of their comrades who fell. Three holders of the Victoria Cross carried a wreath.
The omnibus "Old Bill," which carried soldiers to the lines in the early days of the war, brought up the rear, carrying the permanently disabled exsoldiers.
