SHIELD HOCKEY.

SECOND CHALLENGE.

POVERTY BAY DEFEATED.

A GAME OF INCIDENTS,

On Saturday at Remuera the Poverty Bay representatives, in their •third visit, and the second as shieldUiunters, were overwhelmed 27 minutes after the start of the game, and despite a gallant fight in the second spell, left the field conquered by six goals to one.

It is a long time since such an occurrence has been chronicled in local shield snatches. There is not the least doubt that the visitors caused grave anxiety in the early stages of the game, but the collapse, due to strong attacks on the right fiank, completely upset their calculations, and it was not until the second spell that their delence recovered sufficiently to aeai witn tne varied onslaughts of the Auckland vanguard. In this recovery the 'performance of the Poverty Bay goal-keeper was outstanding, especially after his efforts in the first spell.

The teams were:— Auckland (blue and white): H. Vail, H. Williams, T. G. Parker, N: Brown, S. Robertson, T. Clark, D. Reid, P. Crawley, JS. Watts, C. Watts, R. Philpott. Poverty Bay (scarlet): A. Coker, B. Moore, 11. Sch illunJ, T. Gavin, J. Turbitt, A. McPherson, G. Dunn, T. Hale, T. Turbitt, P. Jones, A. McLean,, Auckland moved first, and an in-pass by Philpott brought a penalty to Auckland. Further advance was stopped by tMoor-e, and Poverty Bay launched a couple of strong attacks.- C.. Watts _ot away to see Gavin clear, nnd_ Turbitt further Improved matters. Quin ana Hale reached Auckland's twenty-five. I*. Broun cleared, and the away, E. Watts had only the goalie In the circle, scoring "with one of characteristic strokes four minutes after-the start.

Play hung in Poverty Bay territory, Coker miss-kicking and conceding a, corner. A sortie by Auckland v was rpr pulsed Iby Gavin, and McLean topkv-the ball to half-way. A centre, by McLean •was stopped by Parker, and play returned to the visitors' twenty-five. Ee'd s centre, looked dangerous, but Moore hit to the side-line. A moment later Robertson struck tho ball over the goal line. T. Turbiti. and Hale and Jones were instrumental In clearing. Reid made ground on the right,, and with Crawley and E. Watts, a fine passing rush ensued. The visitors got away, and Quin dallied to lose a great opportunity to centre. Play transferred to the other end, where the visitors suffered several attacks. T. Turbitt removed, the danger, and the hall went from Hale to Quin and Hale, "who, with a,fine reverse stroke, returned to Quin. the latter s centre, following a fine passing movement, cannoned off Parker to a penalty corner, and Hale "scored with a fine shot nine minutes later than Auckland s goal. T Turbitt initiated another onslaught, and* after the ball had passed through several hands Turbitt shot outside the post. A long hit by Williams gave Auckland relief, but the visitors were soon, back again, J. Turbitt and McLean being prominent, but the baU crossed the line before Ouin could connect. Another sortie by Auckland produced a corner. Moore stopped C Watts' shot, and cleared. McPherson and J." Turbitt stopped an Auckland _ attack. Parker returned, and a .moment later Scholium saved a critical situation, and Gavin next held up the Auckland storming iiarty. The visitors' goal was hotly bombarded, relief coming through the agency ot Moore and Scholium. A.couple ofl red attacks were spoilt by "offside." Then came! a reaction. Philpott centrea, and B ;1 Watts cleverly broke through the visitors ] Maintaining the pressure, Crawley toved too long wi.th the ball, and the visitors took up defensive positions before the ball- came through. Poverty Bay released the shackles of the Auckland attack. Turbitt broke . away to see, Quin foozla an opportunity away. Play!, was transferred to the other end, and six minutes before the spell ended a nice. Com:, bined run saw Reid carve a passage through;tlie defence and net. , „ , Slick work by the Auckland forwards kept Poverty Bay on the defence, and eventually E. Watts shot fast,' and Crawley, following in, raced the ball into an open goal off the rebound. From a corner Crawley stopped, sent to E. Watts, who tapped the ball into the cage. When the game restarted Auckland were first away, and a little bit of short passing 'saw Philpott shoot just outside. Next moment Scholium dflected a shot from Eric Watts. A run by Quin relieved-the pressure, and Auckland conceded a corner; but Turbitt failed to connect lq following in. Auckland were lucky to ..remove the danger, but when the forwards obtained possession they were again goal, hunting, Reed shooting. A furious bombardment followed but Coker stood up to everything.: Eventually the visitors gained. ; a footing; in local territory. Quin bolting along the' right flank, but the attack was not sustained. Auckland worked play back to the other circle, .where Philpott and Reid made attempts from acute angles. Quin again led Poverty Bay in the right direction, but he hit too hard. Auckland took up the running after a tussle between Robertson and Turbitt on the half-way line, and besieged the visitors' citadel, T. Turbitt preventing a goal from a corner shot by C. Watts. Poverty Bay worked along the left flank into unfamiliar territory, only to be sent back and suffer onslaughts from all directions by the Auckland van. A free hit gave Poverty Bay a footing in Auckland's quarters, Gavin, Hale and Turbitt being prominent in improving tlie position.! From a roll-in Crawley made a fine run, hit | across, and Philpott picked up to beat ( Coker. i Auckland J Poverty Bay .............. X J Messrs. A. Williams and 33. J. Hewitt umpired. • I
