GRAND- NATIONAL MEETING

THE OPENING DAY.

FIELDS FOR , TO-MORROW.

The Grand National meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will open at Riccarton to-morrow, and with the excellent fields engaged there should be'some splendid racing. Weather prospects are favourable and the track should be in excellent order, the going being firm.

The Opening Event. TEe meeting • will open with the Trial Hurdles, for which fifteen are carded. Henry of Navarre has shown, that he "can jump, and was unlucky to be beaten at Napier Park. He failed at Trentham in his only start, but he may do better-to-morrow. Hounslow raced well at the Dunedin winter meeting, while at Trentham he. was beaten by a head in the Corunna Hurdles by Sir Musk, and finished fourth in the Winter Hurdles. He disappointed in the Longbeach Hurdles at the Christchureli Hunt meeting last Saturday week, but may do better to-morrow. Polling Day won over a mile and a half at Dunedin, and has since 6hown good form. Rational 11,- has not had much experience oyer hurdles, but he was second to Punchcstown at the last South Canterbury meeting. Huntley beat Polling Day by a head at Ashburton,. and- was. third 'in the Longbeach -Hurdles: at the Christehureh Hunt meeting. Rasouli was third at Foxton. King Comet Jed for a good way in- the;' - Longbeach which was his first' race* and' he"- sK6uld be' improved. He is a smart jumper, and if' he stays on will- be troublesome. SPOON CROUPIER " RANELAGH. The Cashmere Plate. The Cashmere Plate is run at special weights, and there are quite a number that have ncf form. Of those on the 8.11 mark Imitator, who was narrowly, bfiateu in the Maiden Stakes "at Riccarton last Saturday ~ week, and Lady Zephyr, who ran well in the same event, appeal most. Of those oil 8.0, Bay Tree, one of Jefferd's 'team, showed smart form last February, . beating Diatomous and Catalogue in the Sapling Stakes, five furlongs, at Woodville. He was only defeated by half a head in the Sapling Stakes, of similar distance, at Napier Park, while he was third in the Plunket Nursery, five furlongs, to* RedManfred- and _ Lady Nan at Trentham. Make Up • was second in the Winter Steeplechase to Callamart at Ellerslie, was third in the Wellington ■(Steeplechase, and won the July .Steeplechase at the same fixture. He, however, is well up in the weights now. Callamart, after winning the Great Northern arid Winter-Steeplechases at Ellerslie, ;jHyats well beaten in'the Steeple-,• chase,-and finished third i in the July' Steeplechase. LUNA LUX BILLY BOY CALLAMART. The Hack Steeples. * ' « Eight remain in the Enfield' Steeplechase. Red Bank won the Wanganui Steeplechase and the June Steeplechase at Hastings, while he was third in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Quinopal, after running second to Polling Day in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at: Oamaru, won the South Canterbury Steeplechase: from Thurina arid Kapuna. The lastnamed is also engaged in this race, and though he has not been in work long he is well forward. Carinthia has not done much racing recently, 'but-started over country at South Canterbury last month. The Winter Cup. Tlio Winter Cup, as usual, has drawn an excellent field. Cylinder, who is at the head of the handicap, was a good three-year-old, and his form since he returned to racing during the winter has been most pleasing. He won the Parliamentary Handicap ;well, and should again be hard to beat. Shatter has not done much racing recently, but is stated to be well forward. Beacon -Fire performed consistently at both' Ellerslie and Trentham, and if he is all right he should again go a good race. Silver Ring was a smart two-year-old, and has been galloping well recently, tliourfj. a little bit inclined to soreness, but it does not seem to affect him when he is stretched." o'ut, Merry Peel raced well at Trentham.
