MAORI GIRL KILLED.
HORSE STRUCK BY EXPRESS
ANIMAL ALSO DEAD,

HAMILTON, Saturday.
While riding a horso over the Prince's Street railway Crossing at Ngaruawahm this afternoon at G. 20, a Maori girl named Tilly Taliana, aged 12, whose father is employed at the Horotiu freezin" work*, was struck by the AucklanctWellington express and killed instantly. The girl seemingly attempted to bring the horse to a halt, but it became frightened, reared up, and jumped on to the track a moment before the train reached tho crossing. The animal was struck broadside on and was cut to pieccs, while the girl was carried on the front part of the engine for a considerable distance before slio was thrown aside. Her neck was broken and her skull fractured. An inquest was opened this evening before Mr. F. Harris, coroner, of Huntly, and after evidence of identification was heard it was adjourned sine die.
