THE CITY'S EFFORT.

It is generally admitted that State aid in relief of unemployment must be supplemented by private effort if social distress is to be adequately alleviated. Much lias alreadv been done by our various social agencies, but they have found their funds insufficient to meet the many calls upon them, and therefore a comprehensive effort is being made to supplement the funds for the relief of distress by organising in "Prosperity which opens to-day, various functions having for their object* the raising of money to help in providing for the needs of those who are suffering from a lack of fuel, food and shelter. It is encouraging to note the interest that has already been displayed, and the generous response in cash donations to the Mayor's appeal. Much more, however, is needed, and the gain in a liberal response will not be for the recipients alone. The spirit of generosity that will be aroused cannot fail to create a more sympathetic and cheerful outlook in the whole community. Purse strings will be unloosed, and the effect on business will be felt in the larger spending of those who are supporting the Queen contest and other activities. Those in distress will be cheered by the evidenco of practical sympathy with them in their need, and the feeling that the whole community recognises that it is the duty of all to help to lift the load of depression. The humanitarian spirit will in itself do much to induce a new cheerfulness and create a kindly light amid the encircling gloom. The city is promised many attractions, and not the least will be the feeling that by a generous support of the numerous functions arranged a new spirit of hope will be brought into many homes which at present are threatened with want. A generous response is asked for, and wo are sure a generous response will be made.
