TEMPERANCE ALLIANCE.
ANNUAL MEETING HELD. Some 200 delegates attended the annual convention of the Auckland area of the New Zealand Alliance on Saturday afternoon and evening. The afternoon session was presided over by the Rev. W. J. Comrie and the evening session by the Rev. P. S. Smallfield. Mr. Comrie expressed pleasure at seeing such a largo delegation. The annual report showed that in spite of the depressing times, good work was being done by the alliance. The centenary of temperance had been celebrated, a successful gathering being held in the Town Hall, as well as church parades in various centres. Good results had resulted from temperance education. In the afternoon session __ several addresses were given. Misses D. Earle and MeLay spoke on the education of shudren and Mr. K. Melvin oil "Youth and Alcohol." During the tea adjournment the Rev. George Laurenson spoke, giving a message of warning and encouragement, and in the evening Mr. Smallfield expressed deep appreciation of tho revived interest in the work of temperance. The main speaker of the evening was Dr. J. J. North, whose subject was The Awakening of a National Conscience concerning Intoxicating Liquor." Mr. A. J. StauVorthv. M.P.. introduced the question of the medical attitude toward alcohol, and it was decided to make full inquiries in order that an official statement might be made. Officers wore elected as under:—President. Sir George Fowlds: vice-presidents, the same as last year, with the addition of Revs. G. Laurenson, J. Olphcrt, K. •T. Tip'.cr, Mr. T. L. Caley; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Louis Falkner.
