CHILDREN'S PARTY.
FUN AT THE TOWN HALL. Charlie Chaplin, Simple Simon, "Dummy" and attendant clowns all made merry in the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon for the enjoyment of between 1000 and 1500 children, who were entertained by the Newton Unemployed Relief Association. The St. Andrew's Society pipe band proved very popular, as also did a ventriloquist act by Mr. Reg. Xormo. Other contributors to the stage programme were Mr. Howard Moody (piano), "Uncle Tom" (Mr. T. T. Garland), and Messrs. S. Wilmot, R. Dyer, J. McXicce and G. Collctt. About 50 voluntary assistants helped to entertain the children, for whom city firms gave large supplies of milk, fruit, bread and buns free of charge. The organiser said the community owes a debt of gratitude to the firms which supplied their products gratis in the name of charity.
