OBITUARY.
MR. HUGH ROSS. A pioneer settlor of Waihou (Te Aroha district), Mr. Hugh Poss has died, aged 7"> years. Ho arrived at Port Chalmers from Scotland when 20 years of age, and later took up land at Waihou. There was trouble in getting the Maoris to consent to the formation of a road from Paeroa to Thames, until a detachment of the Waikato Cavalry rode from Cambridge to the goldfields in 1579. As far back as 1884 settlers at Waihou used to walk with their butter to Te Aroha, for which at times they had to accept twopence per lb. Mr. Poss had faith in the future of Waihou, and lived to see the district grow into a successful farming area.
