NEWTON "BOOKIE."
POLICE RAID PREMISES. FIXE OF £25 IMPOSED. "This man has a fairly extensive business and is regarded as the biggest bookie in Newton," said DetectiveSergeant Mcllugh in the Police Court this morning, when Gordon William Reach, aged 20, appeared to plead guilty to a charge of using premises at 05, Pitt Street, as a common gaming house on Saturday. Mr. P. W. Schramm appeared for Reach. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that as the result of complaints received by the police Reach's tobaeconifs shop in Pitt Street was kept under observation, and it was raided on Saturday morning by Detectives Moore, Brady and Gillum. The detectives found that Reach had taken about 30 bets on the various races. He frankly admitted the charge. j Mr. Schramm said his client had never been in any trouble previously and was an honest and respectable young man. For some little time he had been taking small -wagers and laying small doubles. Counsel asked that under the circumstances a light fine be imposed.
Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., fined Reach £25 or three months' imprisonment.
