BOGUS "BENEFACTOR."
CHRISTCHURCH SENTENCE. BOARDER AT LEADING HOTEL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. On a charge of theft, Henry William Charles McKay was to-day sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Accused, when arrested, last week, was charged under the name of Joseph Gordon Lamb. Ho had been posing, as a benefactor to the poor and needy but polico inquiries revealed that ho was an habitual criminal, who used several i aliases. Ho was described as a labourer, I aged 20. | McKay Mas released on probation from Auckland prison on April C, and since April 14, when he last reported, tlio polico lost track of him. While staying at Warner's Hotel he was interviewed by detectives, who considered his explanation unsatisfactory and arrested him on a charge of obtaining credit by fraud. Subsequently they found that ho had a quantity of stolen goods in his possession and the owner lias so far not been traced. Terms of imprisonment wero also imposed on the fraud charge and for a breach of probation.
