PROSPERITY WEEK.

COMMENCED TO-DAY. GENEROUS RESPONSE MADE. PROGRAMME OF EVENTS. The official Prosperity Week commenced this morning in aid of the relief of unemployment and social distress in Auckland. During the past few -weeks the fund lias been subscribed to, mostly in cash donations, to the extent of between £4000 and £5000. The preliminary organisations centred chiefly round the* candidature of leu queens, representing different public bodies, whose campaign of ticket-selling and vote-winning has been rewarded with a generous response from the public. Extensive preparations arc being finalised for the Arabian Nights Ball, to be held on Thursday evening. This will bo staged on the. most magnificent scalo ever attempted in New Zealand. The Town Hall will be transformed to inspire all the glamour of the East. The stage will reveal an Eastern temple 50 feet high by 75 feet long, with a background of stars above. The huge frieze that will encircle the ■ walls depicts the '"Caliph - ' mounted on his royal elephant's chair, heading for the temple. Behind him is the rabble of bazaars, snake-charmers, orange sellers, mules and musicians. Wandering Arabs rest beside the cool oaso* among the palms of the desert. Three functions are being held this j evening in aid of the fund. At the I Town Hall there will be a wrestling match between George Walker and Harry Mamos, and the Auckland Wrestling Association has announced! that the whole of its profits will be j handed to the fund and credited to the Sports Queen. There will be a debate j in the concert chamber between two j teams on the subject, "That we Should ] under no Circumstances Fight For King j and Country." At the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen's hall there will be j a concert, in support of the United j Services Queen, presented by a party j of University students. ;

! The various queen committees are apt to engage in promulgating clever schemes to capture votes. The Civil Service queen will benefit from a concert by tlio Carlson Revue Company in the Scots Hall to-morrow evening, and on Wednesday afternoon there will bo a Rugby football match between a team from the District Telegraph Engineers and the University. On behalf of the Transport Queen the Transport Board has arranged for a tramway concert party and orchestra, accommodated on a truck, to play up and down the city during the day. A collection will bo taken on behalf of the queen. There will also be a mock court on Friday between noon and two o'clock at the foot of Queen Street. The Professions Queen will benefit by a concert organised by the Headmasters' Association, to be held in the Seddon Memorial College. Hall to-morrow evening. The programme will be given by students of the Auckland Training College, the Technical College ' Gymnastic Club, and the Victoria Maori Girls' College. Public interest should bo stimulated by a procession to be held ou Friday. On Saturday there will be the carnival in aid of the Sports Queen at Alexandra Park in the afternoon, and the children's party to be given by the Mayoress, Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, in the Town Hall. There will be numerous other attractions arranged by the queen committees, and a window-dressing competition, in which most of the leading! firms are expected to take part. J
