SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
ASSOCIATION'S SOCIAL.
The Auckland School Committees' Association held its annual social on Saturday evening. A large gathering of members and friends was present. Mr. Alfred Roberts presided. Mr. Vernon Drew conducted a short community sing, and musical items were presented in which the following took part: —Miss Hawkins, pianoforte solo; Mcsdames Patterson and Walsh, duet; Mr. F. J. Wells, recitation; Mr E Moore, flute solo; Miss P. Tremain, recitation; Mrs. J. Le Petit, musical sketch; Mrs. P. R. Owen, solo; Mesdames Petit and Owen, duet. Mr. T. U. Wells, chairman of the' Education Board, and Mr. W. J. Campbell, member of the board, were present. Mr. Wells referred to the excellent work being done by school committees. Speaking against centralisation, he said that the personal touch was the life and soul of our educational system, and without it the system would be sadly wanting. The board had a difficult task, as the maintenance allowance had been cut down considerably, and there were nearly 800 schools to maintain.
