WALLABIES WIN.

SECOND RUGBY TEST.

BEAT SPRINGBOKS 21 TO 6

AMAZING SPEED IN LOOSE.

DURBAN, July 23.

In the second Rugby Test match on Saturday the Wallabies defeated the Springboks by 21 points to G. The match, coinciding with the Durban racing holiday season, drew a crowd of IG,OOO, eclipsing the record made by the All Blacks and the Springboks on the same ground in 1925. The ground was fast and the weather warm. M. Louw, the veteran forward, stated the Wallabies were the finest scrummaging pack he had ever played against. Where they excelled was in the amazing fashion they maintained their speed in the loose play, in addition to their gruelling scrummage work. Vainly the huge Springboks took scrums instead of line-outs in an effort to wear down the determined Australians, who avenged all previous defeats. The teams were:—

WALLABIES. Full-back.—Steggall. Three-quarters. — Kelaher, Sturtridge, Cowper, McLean. Five-eight.—Billman. Half-back.—Bennett. Forwards. —Cerutti, Bonis, M. White, Louden, W. G. White, Cook, Hodgson, Bland. SPRINGBOKS. Full-back.—Brand. Three-quarters.—Waring, Gage, White, Turner. Five-eighth.—Osier. Ha lf-baek. —Craven. Forwards.—M. Louw, Kipling, S. G. Louw, Nel, Geere, Bergh, Dalton, Froncrnan.

Playing with amazing dash the Australians had all the better of the first quarter of an hour's play. A number of resolute attacks were stopped only by excellent defence. Kelaher, Louden, and Billman were prominent. The Springboks were dangerous only once, when they went over the line, but lost the ball at the last minute. Thereafter weak passing by the inside backs deprived Australia of several opportunities. At half-time the score was: Australia 13 Springboks 0

The Australians continued their spectacular attacking. Their forwards were playing magnificently in the loose, and holding their opponents in the scrums. The Springboks, endeavouring to wear down their opponents, were taking scrums instead of line-outs. From a scrum near the Springbok twenty-five Bennett went round the blind side and scored. Billman failed to convert. The Springboks, winning the scrums, continued with three-quarter movements, but were unable to penetrate the heroic defence. Brand, the Springboks full-back, was failing to produce his fielding and kicking form, and missed shots at goal from penalties 35 and 45 yards out. The Springboks launched desperate short passing bouts among the forwards, which were initiated by Craven. The Wallabies' deadly tackling, however, frustrated these. A Springbok three-quarter movement breaking down, Kelaher gathered the ball at midfield and passed to Cowper, who passed out to Sturtridge. The last-named returned the pass to Cowper, who returned to Sturtridge, who scored a brilliant try. Billman converted. The Springboks launched another rally, Osier attempting to break through with Craven. The Australian forwards were tiring, but still tackled magnificently. The backs were untiring on defence. Toward tiie finish both sets of backs were very tired, and play was spasmodic. The Australians were heartily cheered on leaving the field. The final score was: — Wallabies 21 Springboks 6
