ONEHUNGA TO AUCKLAND. Proving conclusively thnt he Is perhaps the Empire's greatest little distance star ovfir seven miles, Billy Savidnn, of Olympic fame, led the big field of nearly 100 runners home in the Oneluinga-Auckland foot-race on Saturday. J. P. Kalnugher, president of the centre, started the men off at the Onehunga Post Office, and immediately Savidan and Cooper jumped to the front. A huge crowd which packed the streets practically all the way, cheered the rminers on. Farlaiid and HewitHon, of Weeley, challenged the leaders within half a mile and joined Savidan, who was running right out all the way. His great rival. Norman Cooper, was hack about 20 yards with Briggs and Browne. o£ Lvnndnlfl. Pinson, of Auckland, and Pclham and Nicholson, of Technical. Neil, the Presbyterian star, came up in sixth position, and at Greenwood's Corner he was in third place, next to Cooper, who had worked up to ten yards from Savldan. Savidan ran steadily, on the left tram track, whilst Cooper kept to the footpath and was hindered a little by pedestrians. Browne was about 50 yards buck at tins stage, with Nicholson and Brlfigs following. Wesley men had dropped back, both suffering from "stitch." Near the tram barn at Epsom Cooper was level with haviuaii, with the nearest runners 50 yards back. Browne hnd replaced Neil in third position and Nicholson was running steadily Just, behind Neil. At Raufurly Uoad Browne drew away from Neil, whilst Savidan hnd a 15-yard break on his blonde opponent At Fairfax ltoud Savidan had, increased this to 20 yards and was running in an effortless style. Newmarket was reached at :',.24, and, geing through Broadway, Savidan increased his lead another 15 yards. Loading into Parnell, ho wont ahead until he was easily 100 yards to the good Down St Stephen's Avenue Cooper was distressed, but showed his fighting spirit by increasing his stride and closing the gap to about t>o yards The railway bridge was reached at ■5 34, and Savidan, running as easily as a Phar Lap, drew away to come home a winner at the flour mills by 100 yards. His time of 0(i.30 is a record for the course. Both men wore given a great ovation by the crowd.
