ROUND THE SHOW.

KAFAI CORU BROOM CO., I.TD.

This well-known old firm, with its famous Kapai corn broom, is still to the fore. Its stall at the Winter Show demqnstrates the firing advance in the production of brushes for every purpose. Any question a* to the economic value to the Dominion is demonstrated by the wide range and excellent quality of its products offered at prices that defy fair competition from outside. .

New Zealand supplies a considerable amount of .the raw materia}. Every brush requires New Zealand titnher, and the demand for Southland birch supplies the requirement. Only inferior brushes are made from •white pine. No dairyman or farmer would dream of buying a dairy scrub made of anything but ■birch. It hae been proved many times over that other timbers will not stand up, to. the 6train. Horse-hair, another New Zealand product, represent* another very large proportion of the. materials used. No country in the world produces horee-hair of the quality of the New Zealand article.

It may be surprising to know that every part of the world supplies some special need of the brush maker. Bristle comes from China, Russia and Siberia, and is not obtainable from any other source. Jiass for scavenger and cowshed brooms comes from Africa, Ceylon and South America, each supplying a special grade . unobtainable elsewhere. Fibres come from Mexico, coco-fibre from Ceylon, whalebone from the Arctic and Antarctic, and pitch from iSweden. The list could be extended ad lib. Practically all these, raw materials find their distributing centre in England. Strange as it may eeem, England herself only supplies the ironmongery used, eueh as wire and nails.
