"ANT" COMPETITION.

HEAVY ENTRIES AND GOOD WORK

HAVE YOU AN EYE TO THE FUTURE?

Dear Boys and Girls, —

Auckland boys and girls undoubtedly have a good grip of the English language, and, knowing that a word ended with "ant," they were quite confident of their ability to find it from even a short definition. Thus it was that entries were received in heavy numbers for the "ant" competition that was conducted in the Budget a fortnight ago.

The task set was by no means an easy one, and the average competitor solved correctly only about 14 of the twenty definitions. A very good entry was submitted by Neva Morrison, who succeeded in finding 19 of the 20 words. Also very good was the entry of Peggy Brockbank, who, with 17 correct "ants," was awarded the second prize. Seven competitors succeeded in obtaining 16 correct answers, and from these the remaining two cash prizes were selected, the enclosed riddles being used as the deciding factor. Beryl Kelly received the third award, and Victor Thorpe the fourth. Several found 14 or 15 of the p.nswers, and these entrants were awarded certificates of merit.

I wonder how many boys and girls have already decided what they iniend to be when they grow up. It is really important that we should decide quite early in life the kind of employment which we would like to follow, for by giving parents a clear idea of the work that appeals to them, and for which they have apparent gifts, boys and girls will be enabled to be educated always with an eye to their jobs of the future. To muddle along in a haphazard way and tumble into some back-alley job as soon as he leaves school, without taking into consideration his ability and inclinations, is the sure way for a boy to aim at unhappiness and discontent later on. In order to encourage boys and girls to think about their future vocations, prizes are ,-■. to-day being offered for short para- J&jf2 graphs written on the subject: "What /]) I Want to Be, and Why."
