LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
AFFAIRS OF REFEREES. The conduct of the Point Chevalier sixth grade team toward a referee ou Saturday was referred through the delegate to the junior management committee. It was pointed out that the practice of the referees putting the ball in scrums— an innovation prompted by the Auckland Board of Control—was now discontinued by order of the New Zealand Council, acting on the recommendation by the New Zealand Referees' Association. Discussion took place on the point whether an attacker falling on the ball across the goal line, without touching the ball-with his hands, should be awarded a try. The ruling \vas "play on" until the ball was touched with hands by a player of either side. The official critic, Mr. J. T. Hill, commended the action of a referee in enforcing discipline regarding reckless kicking. He said that this dangerous practice could be checked if referees penalised • and were firm when wild kicking was obvious as a player had possession or was about .to receive the ball. The play'-the-ball rule was also being better' controlled, and the speaker advised the same command as evident in a boxing match, when a referee called "break" and the contenders were bound to obey. _ ,: Linesmen for Saturday.—Carlaw Park No 1, Messrs.
