MARISTS MASTER NEWTON.

Youthful and ambitious Newton must be voted exceptionally unfortunate. They were without their successful hooker, Davis, and two backs —Cameron and Hickey—for their important fixture against Marists, whom they ran to a 6—ll score in the corresponding series of the first round. Dempsey had a bad foot and it was necessary to play a forward, Thompson, on the wing. On the other hand, Marists were without full-back Campbell, and their hooker G. Campbell. The Old Boys, however, are better able to drop a player as their team has been largely two seasons together. The match was fast and well-contested until the last quarter of an hour when the Hangers, who had maintained clever cohesion in constructive play, were Ave points up to eleven. From that point on the green forwards took charge and stimulated their rearguard, which responded with the aid of opportune tries, through their better positional play. The score 24—8 was not by any means a fair criterion of the run of play, which was marked by many illuminating* movements by both teams. Glover was not too reliable for Marists as rear-liner, but allowance has to be made for a colt. List, at centre, was also inconsistent. The ! wingers, L. and B. Schultz, played with Initiative. B. Schultz revealing tons of pace. He was always dangerous, was responsible for Herring's first try and, gained a direct reward towards the end i through sheer determination. Brisbane was brilliant in the first half, and Dunn showed up with Hassan as the game advanced. Webberley, Herring and Laird were the pick of a robust pack. Herring should by now stand high in the estimation of the selectors. Dempsey, considering his disability, played magnificently for I Newton as fuU-back. He ia a versatile and

clever player. Pope was the best back in the game. He has struck splendid form and was in everything. He is quick to see and make an opening and is as solid as a rock on defence. Brimble and Porteous were the other two backs who impressed. Quirke and Nathan ably led the vanguard, Nathan being a tower of strength in the heavy going. A promising new comer in the forwards was Oakley Browne, who showed an avidity for work and has tho speed. Newton have a lighter task on Saturday and will be preparing for knockout honours.
